A supermarket giant has said it is now "exploring options" regarding one of their two stores in Congleton - after the town centre site was put up for sale for £1.2 million.

Discount retailer Aldi looks set to shut its store on Mountbatten Way, Congleton.

Aldi also has a branch in Congleton on West Heath Shopping Centre.

An Aldi spokesperson said: "We are exploring options for our Mountbatten Way store and will keep the community updated on developments."

Estate agent Lamb & Swift, who are marketing the site, state in their full description: "The property comprises of a detached single-storey supermarket building, trading as Aldi which is relocating.

"The property benefits from 80 parking spaces. Internally, the property consists of an open shopfloor sales area, ancillary space, warehouse and loading bay."

The news comes two months after Aldi secured planning permission to build a new supermarket in nearby Biddulph.

However, on Friday, a scheme to bring 175 new homes, supermarket, local centre, offices, and light industrial development to Congleton was given outline planning permission.

This site forms 23.55 hectares of the Congleton Business Park Extension allocation within the Cheshire East Local Plan Strategy and sits to the north of Viking Way/Barn Road.
