A Congleton holiday business has been given a £1,000 fine for breaching coronavirus rules.

Macclesfield Police announced the business had received the fine on social media.

It has not been revealed whereabouts in Congleton the business is based.

A spokesperson for Macclesfield Police said: "Officers had received reports that a holiday accommodation provider in Congleton had remained open with three couples staying overnight on Sunday 8 November.

"Under the new lockdown regulations, holiday accommodation is classed as a restricted business and must close until Wednesday 2 December when the government will review the restrictions.

"The officers attended, engaged and explained with the owners but had no choice to enforce the lockdown regulations and issue a fixed penalty notice of £1,000 due to this blatant breach.

"Now more than ever we must stick to the new rules in a bid to reduce the spread of coronavirus and save lives."

Macclesfield Police posted a short message to accompany, which stated officers had "no other choice" but to issue the fine.

The post read: "Thank you to the majority of people sticking to the rules however there are still a minority of people who continue to blatantly flout them.

"It is a shame we have had to issue this fine but there was no other choice to help reduce the spread of the virus."
