Congleton's Tree of Light was officially switched on by Town Mayor, Cllr Sally Ann Holland and Rotary-Congleton President, Rtn. Stewart Price on Saturday.

It was a deliberately low-key event in the interests of Covid-19 safety and social-distancing.

The tree is dedicated to the memory of Rtn. Alan Parton, who brought the idea of the Tree of Light to Congleton in 2019.

Alan's widow, Barbara was one of very few people who attended the event, together with Patti Pinto from the William Dean Trust, and Jackie MacArthur, town marketing manager and deputy chief officer. Past president of Rotary, Rod Goodier and Rtn. Rachel Brown organised the Tree of Light this year.

The tree is now a growing Christmas tree, located in the Community Gardens in Lawton Street. The Tree of Light will become an annual celebration of those we wish to remember at Christmastime.

Sales of stars, each with a personal message, so far have exceeded the number bought last year.

There is still time to purchase a star, write a personal message and have it placed around the tree. The Visitor Information Centre at the Town Hall has stars, so too does Allens Newsagents on Bridge Street and the town's funeral parlours.

Stars may also be bought online until December 23rd from Congleton Rotary club's website. They will be hung around the tree as they are bought.

In order to acquire and establish the tree, Congleton Rotary Club has received generous support from the town council and The William Dean Trust. As a result, all proceeds from sale of stars will be used to support Rotary good causes in the local area.

The tree will be lit from 3pm every day throughout the Christmas holidays.
