Congleton dog trainer releases book to help new puppy owners

By James Kelly 3rd Sep 2020

A Congleton dog trainer has written a book to help the thousands of people across the UK and beyond who got a four-legged companion during the lockdown.

Hazel Rafferty is a trainer at the Danesford Obedience Dog Training Club, but with classes suspended at Mossley Village Hall, she had to find new ways to help train the town's puppies.

Hazel told Congleton Nub News: "People were still getting puppies and they still want to have them trained, so the main trainer got in touch to try and come up with some things we could do.

"We did a few training sessions over Skype, but it is not very easy to train a dog that way. I decided instead to write a little PDF to send out to people and the demand was just phenomenal."

As the lockdown went on, Hazel suggested turning the PDF document into a fully-fledged dog training book to be put on sale to a wider audience.

"It's taken me a little while to get there, but while the kids were off school, they were able to help with the photographs of our Dachshund, Winston, who modelled for the book. We managed to get it done and it's up for sale on Amazon," Hazel explained.

The book titled, 'Train Your Puppy In Only 15 Minutes Per Day With Danesford Obedience Dog Training Club', was released last month with all profits going to the club.

Hazel said the book is aimed primarily at beginner dog trainers or those who want to brush up on their knowledge.

"It's hopefully going to be really good for the club and really good for Congleton and put us on the map a bit more," she added.

The club has good pedigree when it comes to training the town's puppies and dogs after going for nearly 50 years. They were also awarded club of the year in 2019 in the Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Training Scheme.

While the club is aiming to resume in-person classes at the end of the month, Hazel might still be apprehensive about attending.

"We thought if we put this book for sale on Amazon, anyone can get it and hopefully just enjoy it. It's there forever and it's something for Congleton to be proud of because at the club we really go that extra mile and try our best for everybody," she said.
