Residents have been invited to join members of Elizabeth's Group and walk with them along the new Congleton Link Road on Sunday to celebrate its historic name.

Setting off in groups of six, members will be wearing suffragist costumes and strolling along the bypass from 10am.

The road will be officially named Wolstenholme Elmy Way in honour of Elizabeth Wolstenholme Elmy who lived in Congleton from 1874 to 1918, at a special opening ceremony on Monday and will then be opened to traffic.

Residents who wish to join the walk can message the group on Facebook or email [email protected]

From 5pm today, members of the public will be allowed to walk the road and cyclists can also be among the first to explore the £90m 5.5km route, which is to be named after Congleton's "pioneering educationalist" Mrs Elmy, who also campaigned for women's suffrage.
