PM is 'threat to the nation's health and must resign' - Congleton parties respond to latest Boris Johnson scandal

Three of the four major parties in Congleton believe Boris Johnson should resign.

Boris Johnson took Prime Minister's Questions at noon on Wednesday when he admitted attending the May 2020 lockdown party at No 10 and apologised.

Mr Johnson, said he thought the party was a 'work event' and admitted he should have stopped the gathering. It was his first public appearance since details were revealed.

Congleton MP Fiona Bruce has not responded to multiple requests for comment.

Of the four main parties who have responded to a request for Congleton Nub News comment, both representatives for Congleton Liberal Democrats, Green Party and Labour believe the PM should resign over the alleged May 2020 coronavirus gathering.

Congleton Liberal Democrats were first to respond and call for the resignation of the 57-year-old over the party at No 10 during lockdown.

Congleton East Ward Liberal Democrat Robert Douglas said on Behalf of the Congleton Liberal Democrats:

"As our Party Leader, Sir Ed Davey, said at today's Prime Minister's Question Time, the Prime Minister has made a shameful attempt to apologise for a party that was held in No 10's Downing Street garden on 20th May 2020 during the first lock down.

"The Prime Minister has attended and sanctioned at least one party breaking the lockdown rules. On the other hand, the British public in the most difficult of situations, when loved ones were very ill or dying, complied with the rules laid down by the Prime Minister and consequently were unable to give support or say goodbye to their loved ones.

"The Prime Minister has lost the moral authority to give guidance to the British public and as a consequence, the Prime Minister is a threat to the health of our nation and must resign.

"This issue is about moral judgement and not about party politics as demonstrated by Douglas Ross, the Leader of the Scottish Conservatives, who is also calling for the resignation of the Prime Minister following the feeble excuse that Mr Johnson gave at today's Prime Minister's Question Time."

Next to reply was Congleton Constituency Labour Party.

Michael Unett, who could be Congleton's next General Election Labour candidate said: "Boris Johnson absolutely has to go - no integrity, honesty or leadership.

"But even more telling is the spineless members of the cabinet around him having either attended parties themselves or lacking the integrity to condemn his actions and leave this rotten-to -the core Government."

Cllr Unett attended Congleton High School and Sixth Form until 2015. He was elected Chairman of Alsager Town Council at the annual meeting in May last year.

The law graduate was elected to Alsager Town Council in May 2019 as the youngest person ever to be elected to the town council.

This follows the ex-Vice Youth Chair of Congleton Labour Party calling for Fiona Bruce MP to resign from her Johnson-appointed special government role, as Congleton Nub News reported on last month.

Third to respond were Cheshire East Green Party, who's candidate came fourth in Congleton in the 2019 general election.

John Knight, on behalf of Cheshire East Green Party, said: "On 20th May 2020, the Prime Minister attended a garden party with dozens of his employees.

"While we were staying home, while loved ones gave birth, or died, or were buried alone - the Prime Minister partied. It is right that we are furious and it is fair that we feel abandoned. And yes - the Prime Minister should resign.

"But we must not lose sight of why we stayed home - to protect one another. Hundreds of thousands of people in the UK have lost their lives to this virus. Millions across the world; mothers, daughters, fathers, sons, partners - people who were loved. And if we hadn't acted to protect one another, many more would have died. So at a time when we feel frustrated at the recklessness of those setting the rules - let's keep doing our best to protect each other.

"Meanwhile, NHS staff have to work in unsafe conditions - as highlighted by the March with Midwives vigils and demonstrations last November. With more and more NHS staff off sick, all this government has suggested is sending them back to work when they are potentially still spreaders, or not yet recovered.

"Let's lead with fairness, responsibility and integrity. And if that leaves the Prime Minister behind, so be it."

Two other requests for comment were submitted for this article.

Congleton Conservatives were contacted for a statement. Glen Williams of Congleton Conservatives stated "I have no comment to make."

Finally, was our town's parlimentarian Fiona Bruce. The article will be updated if Fiona Bruce MP responds to a request for comment.
