Christmas Party Scandal: Congleton Labour asks Fiona Bruce MP to consider resigning from special role

The Chair of Congleton's Constituency Labour Party has sent an open letter to our town's MP Fiona Bruce, and asked her to possibly resign from a PM-appointed role.
It follows allegations of Christmas parties taking place at 10 Downing Street last year, right next to the home of the Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
The gatherings are said to have taken place when most of the country were staying at home, following rules to avoid socialising given from central government.
Cllr Unett, who could face Conservative Fiona Bruce in the race to become Congleton's MP at the 2024 General Election, addressed the letter to the 64-year-old's Westminster office.
In it, the 24-year-old calls for Fiona's resignation in her non-Congleton government role as the Prime Minister's Special Envoy for Freedom of Religion or Belief.
This was as Unett believed if Fiona continued in her role, it would "send the message that you think it is ok for the government to break its own laws and restrictions and lie to the British public".
The Alsager Town Councillor and Chair of the Congleton Constituency Labour Party published a two page open letter to social media.
"It is infuriating and sickening that those who made the rules could not follow the rules themselves," said Mr Unett.
"It is an insult to families, to all those who died, and everyone who missed out last year because they did the very basics of following the restrictions to keep each other safe when our own leaders could not do the same."
"The Government and the Prime Minister have a responsibility to lead by example but are treating the British public with contempt, breaking the rules they set out, and then blatantly lying and misleading us about all the allegations.
"And this has dangerous consequences in any future COVID-19 restrictions that might be needed."
Unett has been Chair of Congleton Constituency Labour Party since July 2018.
The Congleton parliamentary constituency includes Congleton, Sandbach, Middlewich and Alsager.
He added: "This Government and Boris Johnson must be held to account -the status quo of 'one rule for us and no rules for them' cannot continue."
As well as prompting Congleton's MP since 2010 to consider her position as a PM's Special Envoy, Unett also asked four other questions of the Wick-born MP.
"1. Were you at any time within the past year aware of any of these parties?
"2. Did you yourself attend any parties during the times when the COVID-19 restrictions banned such gatherings?
"3. Do you condemn the actions of the Prime Minister in lying that a party did not take place?
"4. Do you have confidence in and continued support for the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, in light of these events?"
Fiona Bruce has not responded to the letter, sent at 3pm on Wednesday.

In total, three government staff parties are to be investigated.
These are believed to have been held at Downing Street on November 27, December 18, and at the education department on December 10.
The insistence of 'no rules being broken' and an apology for the Allegra Stratton video remains the government response to the suspected parties at No. 10.
Fiona Bruce MP's only public statement since leaked Christmas Party laughter video has been during PMQs, where she pressed the Prime Minister in the House of Commons yesterday on resettlement for Afghans who belong to religious minorities.
She stressed it was important they are included under the Afghan Citizens Resettlement Scheme.
Fiona Bruce MP was re-elected for a fourth time two years ago this month. She secured 33,747 votes for the Conservatives, to Labour candidate Jo Dale's 15,186.
December also marks a year since Fiona Bruce took on her Prime Minister's Special Envoy for Freedom of Religion or Belief role, for which Congleton Labour's Chair asked her to consider her position on.
