The Prime Minister has pledged to help protect scientific research at Jodrell Bank.

Congleton MP Sarah Russell has welcomed the commitment from Andy Burnham to find a solution to funding pressures facing scientific research at Jodrell Bank Observatory.

Mrs Russell spoke directly to the new Prime Minister in the House of Commons on Tuesday, September 1, calling for action to address funding cuts that threaten world-leading scientific research at the internationally renowned observatory.

She said: "Jodrell Bank in my constituency faces a significant problem in the medium term because of funding cuts.

"Would it be possible for him (Mr Burnham) to work with me and No.10 North, alongside my friend and colleague, the Member for Macclesfield, to address this issue?"

In response, Mr Burnham committed to working with Mrs Russell, Macclesfield MP Tim Roca, and No.10 North to ensure that a solution is found and that scientific research at Jodrell Bank can continue.

He said: "Every one of my generation went on a school trip to Jodrell Bank, and there is no way that we can see its demise.

"It will not happen under my government.

"I know that changes have been made in relation to research funding, but Jodrell Bank is a heritage asset for the country as well as a research asset.

"I will indeed set up the meeting that my Honourable Friend requires. There must be a way to save Jodrell Bank, and I give her a commitment today at this dispatch box, we will find it."

Speaking after the debate in Westminster, Mrs Russell said: "Jodrell Bank is one of Britain's greatest scientific institutions, with a proud history of world-leading research and inspiring future generations of scientists.

"The prospect of scientific research being scaled back or ceasing because of funding pressures has been deeply concerning for myself and my constituents.

"This is a significant step forward, but I will continue to see this work through until we have a full solution in place."

Mr Roca added: "I welcome Prime Minister Andy Burnham's clear commitment that the Government will find a way to safeguard its future. He has also committed to meeting Sarah and me to discuss the situation and the action needed.

"This is an important step forward, but the work must continue. I will keep working closely with the Government, the University of Manchester, Jodrell Bank's scientists and other partners to secure a sustainable future for this iconic institution and ensure it remains fully operational for generations to come."

The Minister for Science, Innovation and Investment, Chris McDonald MP, has already contacted the two local MPs regarding the next steps.

The three of them are due to meet next week to discuss the detail of potential solutions and the future support needed to safeguard the observatory's research programmes.
