Congleton Town Council has been granted permission to turn land at the back of the town hall into a wildflower meadow area.

Speaking at Thursday's Congleton Town Council meeting of Town Hall, Assets and Services Committee, Ruth Burgess, streetscape development manager, confirmed the news.

The area of land is on a separate contract to the normal streetscape contract.

Mrs Burgess confirmed the grass on the land will be allowed to grow and the streetscape team will be planting a number of perennial plants, wildflower plants and having bug hotels to encourage wildlife in that built up section of town.

Cllr Suzy Firkin said: "I think it is going to look really nice and make a real difference."

Cllr Denis Murphy had concerns the area could prove "attractive" for the dumping of rubbish and queried whether that would be taken into account by the streetscape cleaning up teams.

Mrs Burgess said: "If we do find an increase and it is causing more work by people fly-tipping then we would have to revert back to grass cutting because we cannot encourage fly-tipping."

Cllr Murphy suggested that members of the streetscape team checked the area and carried out a litter pick if required.

The deputy mayor added: "It's going to spoil it for the wildlife, but it would also spoil the view. The last thing you want to do is look at nice wildflowers over tipped up takeaway packets."
