Congleton road among Cheshire's worst for red light runners

Local News by Matthew Hancock-Bruce 16th Jun 2026

A Congleton road is among the worst in Cheshire for red light offences.

More than 8,800 motorists have been caught running red lights across the county in the last three years.

That is according to figures released by Cheshire Police through a Freedom of Information request submitted by online car retailer cinch.

Ben Welham, motoring expert at cinch, said: "Driving through a red light can happen when drivers misjudge the timing of a light changing from green to amber to red, or attempt to make it through a junction too late.

"However, failing to stop at a red light can put motorists, cyclists and pedestrians at serious risk, particularly at busy junctions where multiple lanes of traffic are moving at once.

"These figures highlight just how regularly these offences are being recorded across Cheshire and should serve as an important reminder for drivers to approach junctions with enough time to stop if the lights change."

A total of 8,848 offences for failing to comply with a red traffic light signal were recorded between January 2023 and March 2026.

This figure has risen each year, with 1,498 offences recorded in 2023, 2,164 in 2024 and 4,496 in 2025.

As of March 31, there have been 690 such offences recorded in Cheshire in 2026.

The Freedom of Information request also revealed the five locations with the highest number of these offences.

1. A557 Watkinson Way, Widnes

2. A523 Mill Lane, Macclesfield

3. A527 Park Lane, Congleton

4. B5181 Churchill Way, Macclesfield

5. A540 Parkgate Road, Chester

Park Lane, Congleton is also had for drivers not knowing the Highway Code regarding joining roundabouts!
The number of near accidents I have had at the roundabout at the bottom of Park Lane is unbelievable. They just drive onto it without any regard for motorists already on the roundabout and do not give way.
