With Congleton's town centre set to be sprinkled with more attractive decorations this year, the town council will pursue having Christmas lights on the front of the Congleton Town Hall.

Whilst the town council's Christmas Working Group was looking at Christmas Lights for the town centre, one of the companies quoted forwarded a proposal to light up the front of the town hall.

The town council was mindful of the fact that the town hall is a listed building and they cannot undertake these types of projects without consulting with the Conservation Officer from Cheshire East Council.

Speaking at last Thursday's Congleton Town Council meeting of Town Hall, Assets & Services Committee, David McGifford for the town council, asked councillors whether they felt it was a "good idea".

Cllr George Hayes queried whether the image provided above would turn into a "reality".

Cllr Hayes said: "I would hate to see the prestige of the town hall as such a central building depleted by a half-hearted attempt.

"However, if it is does mirror what is shown in the picture, I think it could be a worthwhile thing to progress."

Mr McGifford stated that the company would have to provide imagery of what they planned to put up on the town hall.

Cllr Duncan Amies queried whether the town council would be asking for one single colour light or multi colour.

Mr McGifford suggested the decoration would be white LED lights.

Mr McGifford told councillors: "Because time is quite tight on this and this came in relatively late, we have got two choices, we can either not explore it or delegate authority to the Christmas Working Group team."

Cllr Duncan Amies said: "For me you can never have enough lights for Christmas."

Cllr Robert Hemsley suggested that the town council explored having other colour lights on the town hall apart from Christmas themed, which could be used for various occasions throughout the year.

Cllr David Brown said: "I think lighting up the town hall is fantastic, if we can do it by projection rather than fixing up lights that would be my preferred solution."

Cllr Hayes felt it would be advantageous to understand what the building would look like in the day time.

Cllr Hayes added: "Often these things can look beautiful in the evening, but often would look very out of place and damage the integrity of a building in the day time."

Councillors asked Mr McGifford to continue to investigate and pursue further quotes with more detail that would be brought before the appropriate committee.
