The second presentation in the Monday Miscellany series concerns the 60+ flags that decorated the town centre during the Summer of 2022, in celebration of the 750th Anniversary of Congleton's first Town Charter. Although only a few showed actual coats of arms, most displayed simple heraldic features, including a variety of mythical creatures.
Do you know the difference between a Griffin and a Wyvern for inastance? Or how to tell that a family's coat of arms belongs to the eldest son, not to his father or younger brother? Why is it called a "coat" of arms, anyway?
Come along and learn some simple heraldry. Entry is free, but please be prepared to give a donation for Congleton Community Projects, whose voluteer artists hand painted the flags.
