As I reflect on the past year since stepping into the role of Leader of Cheshire East Council, I want to extend a heartfelt 'thank you' to all the councillors and residents who have supported me with their words of encouragement and sage advice.

It's been a year marked by challenges, and I recognise that navigating the complexities of local governance has not always been straightforward.

During this time, we have been tasked with making tough, and at times unpopular, decisions.

However, my unwavering commitment to protecting our most vulnerable residents remains steadfast. I am proud to report that the council is in a more stable financial position now than a year ago, and we are actively working towards enhancing our operational efficiency.

This is only the beginning; the pace of change must continue to advance, given the transformation needed to effectively manage the delivery of over 400 services.

Achieving the savings and efficiencies outlined in our budget for 2025/26 and beyond will demand ongoing dedication and determination.

Rest assured, I will not shy away from making difficult decisions.

Last week, I attended the annual conference of the Local Government Association, where I had the opportunity to meet councillors from various political backgrounds. It was a reminder that despite our differences, we all share a common goal: to serve our communities to the best of our abilities. It is this dedication that motivates us to put our names on election ballots.

Unfortunately, it is disheartening to witness the growing trend of verbal abuse and harassment aimed at councillors, both in person and on social media.

Such hostility drives away capable individuals who might otherwise contribute positively to our communities.

On a brighter note, I want to give a big shout-out to Macclesfield Pride. Last Saturday's parade and festivities in the Market Place showcased the vibrant spirit and love within our town. Events like these remind us of the strength found in diversity and community.
