Congleton Lawn Tennis Club thanked all the ladies who supported the club and entered the club's ladies' singles event, which enabled them to stage the competition for the first time in a few years.

The event sponsored by Cheshire Cat Distillery was staged on Sunday (15th August), mostly in dry conditions but with a couple of rain breaks.

The final was an epic tussle between Beth Hitchen and Larysa Walls. Beth claimed the first set before Larysa fought back to take the second.

In the third set championship tie break Beth raced into an early lead but Larysa fought back and edged slightly ahead.

However, Beth hit some fine ground strokes as the drizzle started again, which was enough to swing the contest back in her favour and then clinch the title.

Beth received a large bottle of gin from the sponsors who had also provided a mini bottle of gin for each competitor.

Larysa received a runners-up prize which was a pizza voucher courtesy of another of the club's partners Portobello Pizzeria.

In the final of the plate event, Eileen Grigg who had some long matches throughout the afternoon put in one last effort to defeat Kerry Hall.

Thanks went to all the competitors and the sponsors for their support in getting this event back on the club calendar.

On the social front the club will be staging a quiz night on Friday, 15th October to raise funds for the club and its charity partner Visyon.

Teams can have four to six people and the cost is £5 per head.

Tickets should be booked through Eileen on 07786 782187.
