Warning to parents after youngsters caught riding e-scooters in Congleton town centre
By Matthew Hancock-Bruce 10th Jun 2026
E-scooter owners have been warned they could face prosecution.
Police in Congleton came across two youngsters riding the electric powered vehicles on Tuesday evening, June 9.
The riders were educated about the legislation around the use of e-scooters, with their parents called to retrieve them and issued a formal warning.
Now, police have used this incident to raise awareness of the pitfalls of e-scooter ownership.
A spokesperson said: "We would like to reiterate to parents whose children own e-scooters or e-bikes, or who are considering buying them - these vehicles are classified as motor vehicles, they cannot be ridden on the road or in a public place without being registered, and without a license and insurance.
"This means they are liable to be seized under Section 165 of the Road Traffic Act 1988, and riders can be prosecuted where appropriate.
"Please read up on the legislation to avoid you and your children being caught out, and please take the time to educate your children to ensure they are being safe and legal."
