A retired IT support specialist from Congleton, who was seriously injured during a cycling holiday in India, is on the road to recovery after getting back on his bike.

Father-of-three John Jervis sustained a serious head injury when he was involved in a head-on collision with a three-wheeled pickup vehicle during the third day of a tour in Nagercoil in February 2019. He also suffered spinal injuries, double vision and fractured ribs.

Following treatment in India, John returned to the UK where he spent more than five months in hospital. He was left with a loss of function to the right side of his body.

John, 66, and his wife Jill, 64, instructed expert International Serious Injury lawyers at Irwin Mitchell to investigate the incident and help him gain access to specialist treatment and support he requires.

Now, around 16 months after the accident, John is continuing with his recovery. He is making good progress and has even returned to cycling.

Mr Jervis' injuries also led him to have difficulties with speaking and swallowing. As part of his rehabilitation process, he is helped by a physiotherapist and occupational therapist, and he also receives speech and language therapy.

He enjoys being back on his bike, and uses a turbo trainer at home, which helps with his range of movement and fitness levels.

Jill, John's wife of 36 years, said: "John is getting better every day, and it is such a relief for me to know he is on the road to recovery.

"After the accident last year, we weren't sure if he would ever cycle properly again, so it was wonderful when he finally got back out there. His rehab has definitely helped with this.

"Prior to what happened, John would cycle an average of between 50 and 60 miles per ride. He is still a long way off that, but can now do up to eight miles on the road which is incredible considering the weakness and balance issues he faces.

"He also struggles on busy roads, so the start of lockdown was perfect for him. Now things are busier again, he is sticking to cycle paths and bridleways as much as possible.

"While nothing will change what John has gone through in the past year, I am so proud to be by his side as he rebuilds his life day by day."

Allison Slingo, one of the specialist International Serious Injury lawyers at Irwin Mitchell representing the couple, said: "John and Jill have had a terrible 16 months, with the accident having a devastating impact on their lives.

"However, it is great to hear that John is making tremendous progress and is now able to cycle again, which he loved to do prior to his injuries."

Cheryl Palmer-Hughes, who heads the team representing John, said: "I am inspired by his determination, and he is a true example of what can be achieved when you set your mind to it."
