Police officers found around 250 cannabis plants inside a Congleton town centre building just two days before a fire broke out inside the same property.

Cheshire Police are investigating the discovery of the cannabis factory as well as the cause of the blaze which broke out in the derelict building on West Street on Sunday.

However, it is not yet known whether the two incidents are linked.

A Cheshire Police spokesperson told Nub News: "Officers conducted a warrant at a premises on West Street on Friday 15 May at around 9.50am.

"Following a search of the property officers recovered around 250 cannabis plants. No arrests were made and the building was secured."

Nub News reported that shortly after 4.30pm on Sunday (17th May) fire crews discovered a fire on the second floor of the property on West Street. The roof has been damaged in the blaze.

Eight fire engines attended, two from Congleton, one from Alsager, one from Crewe, one from Holmes Chapel, one from Sandbach, one from Bollington, one from Lymm and an aerial appliance.

The Cheshire Police spokesperson added: "Firefighters were called to the same building following reports of a fire.

"Police officers attended to assist with road closures. An investigation into the cause of the fire is currently underway."
