They'll be one less empty building on Congleton's High Street - but it won't be occupied by a business.

A former bank in Congleton looks set to be converted into two five-bedroomed HMOs.

Stockport company Homes Meyer Property Ltd has applied to Cheshire East Council for permission to change the use of the former TSB Bank at 13 High Street into houses in multiple occupation.

The design and access statement submitted on behalf of the applicant states: "The proposed scheme involves the change of use of the properties and sub-division of the ground, first and second floors, to create two small HMOs.

"There are other internal alterations in the form of removal of chimney breasts, new door openings at first and second floors, and insertion of staircases.

"Externally, changes are very limited and involve the reinstatement of the ground floor door and first floor window."

There is no on-site parking – although there is provision for bicycles.

The planning document says the scheme will provide 'well appointed living accommodation which enables people to live independently, but with the benefit of community and shared facilities'.

It adds: "Good sized bedrooms, all with en-suites, are provided together with extended communal living spaces for residents including a home office and lounge/kitchen/dining room at ground floor level."

Two applications have been submitted – one for change of use (22/1216C) and the other for listed building consent (22/1218C).

They can be viewed on the planning portal on Cheshire East's website.

The closing date for comments is May 5.
