Volunteers from Beartown Rickshaw are riding high after receiving a financial boost from Castle Green Homes.

The registered charity successfully applied to the homebuilder's Mission Green Congleton initiative for funding towards the cost of a new rickshaw battery.

With this, they will be able to continue supporting socially isolated residents and those with limited mobility to get out into the fresh air.

Beartown Rickshaw trustee Ant Bolding said: "We use one of the greenest forms of transport, a battery assisted pedal tricycle to give disabled residents an opportunity to experience the wind in their hair.

"We take residents, mainly from care homes, for a rickshaw ride to Congleton Park, Astbury Mere and the town centre.

"For residents of Clayton Manor Care Home we use Barn Road, the link road and Giantswood Lane, adjacent to the Castle Green development, for the return leg of our journey.

"The overall cost of the rickshaw is £12,000 which we'd raised, but we needed some extra funds towards a new battery and so applied to Mission Green for help."

Mission Green is a voluntary scheme, linked to Castle Green's Woodland Manor development.

This is in addition to the community investment the homebuilder will make under a Section 106 agreement signed during the planning process.

Through the scheme, almost £9,000 has been shared among 18 projects with an emphasis on the environment or residents' wellbeing.

Castle Green Homes sales director Sian Pitt said: "Beartown Rickshaw's volunteers provide a fantastic service, enabling people to have fun out in the fresh air.

"The application ticked all the boxes for Mission Green – supporting residents' wellbeing and being a green mode of transport.

"We were happy to be able to contribute towards the cost of a new rickshaw battery, helping keep the wheels turning so that more people can enjoy rickshaw rides."
