Library talks
Mike Tingle's Monday talks series at Congleton Library resumes on 9th March, at 2:30pm in the downstairs meeting room. As in previous years, Mike will give his talks on the second Monday afternoon of each month, March to October (excluding August). Each presentation lasts about an hour and is illustrated with dozens of photos.
This year's series begins with Congleton Curios – hiding in plain sight, a virtual tour of the town focussing on dozens of interesting objects that most passers-by are unaware of, or just ignore. Where, for instance, can you find a bull in a charity shop, a Bowl of Hygeia, a portcullis or a street name sign hanging on a belt?
So come along to see the answers and learn many more intriguing facts about your town. Entry is free, but donations to Congleton Museum are appreciated.
The other six talks include two new topics: Congleton Bear Hunt, concerning our "Beartown" nickname, and The Legend of the Eagle and Child, relating to the Stanleys, Barons of Alderley. The remaining four are updates of presentations from Mike's 2024 series.
A leaflet giving the dates and brief details of each talk is available in the Library foyer. If Monday afternoon is not convenient, you have a second chance, as Mike will also be presenting the same talks at Holmes Chapel Library at 11am on the third Tuesday of each month.
