Dog walkers have been urged to take care following the discovery of a 'potentially toxic' substance at a local beauty spot.

Blue-green algae has been spotted in the lake at Brereton Heath Local Nature Reserve near Congleton.

Cheshire East Countryside Ranger Service has issued a warning, with visitors advised to keep dogs and children away from the water.

A CECRS spokesperson said: "Please be aware that blue-green algae is present in the lake at Brereton Heath Local Nature Reserve.

"Blue-green algae is potentially toxic and can cause illness in animals.

"Do not allow dogs to enter the lake or drink the water in the lake.

"Please avoid personal contact with lake water and keep children away from the water."
