Try out a brand new sport at Congleton Tennis Club's 'Super Saturday'
There's more than just tennis at this weekend's Congleton Lawn Tennis Club event.
The West Street is pleased to be hosting a special 'Super Saturday' this coming Saturday July 16.
And visitors will get the chance to try out the obscure American sport of pickleball.
Yep, you read that right, pickleball.
The game takes cues from tennis with the same net, but has a narrower court resmebling badminton. Two or four athletes use solid paddles to hit a plastic ball with holes in over a net.
So with the similarities to the club's specialism, you won't have to learn much, and the skills from tennis are transferable.
Pickleball was founded in Washington in 1965. The court size is 20 feet by 44 feet.
But if you don't fancy a taste of pickleball, there's plenty of tennis to play. Congleton Lawn Tennis Club opens at 8am this Saturday, but there is a proper match on two hours later.
In the morning the clubs men's first team are hosting Bowdon in a National Club League Play Off match.
The competitive game starts at 10am and spectators are welcome - there should be some quality tennis on show.
In the afternoon, the club is holding its normal Saturday club session from 1pm with all members welcome to come along and play social tennis using the pegboard fours system with five courts in action.
As an added bonus from 12.30pm, Crewe's The Sunshine Street Food Company will be on site serving delicious food.
They will be offering wholesome Afro-Carribean dishes to help you refuel after a bit of whiff-whaff.
"There will also be a pop up outdoor bar to enjoy," said Congleton Lawn Tennis Club's Andrew Giltrap.
"Non-members are be welcome to come and have a go at tennis or take a tour of the club facilities.
"It should be an amazing day. Thank you to everyone for their support."
The ball machine will be available for use followed by a speed serve competition with prizes.
The club have welcomed another new partner, and we're not talking about a doubles partner!
Edge Distillery who are based at Alcumlow Hall Farm in Astbury and are owned and run by husband and wife team, Clare and Mike Ryan are providing the prizes for the 2022 Club mixed doubles plate winners.
The gin distillers, who opened a bar at their distillery in November last year - and recently branched into vodka - are delighted to support the club.
"The Edge Distillery is absolutely delighted to be the sponsors of the 2022 mixed double plate," Clare said.
"Good luck to all the players and we look forward to welcoming the winners to one of our Gin tasting and distillery tour nights soon."
Andrew is grateful for their backing.
"They have also kindly agreed to offer all tennis club members 10% discount on any Edge products in the shop at their distillery," he added.
"Members simply need to show their tennis club membership tag to prove that they are a member of the club and the discount will be applied."
Their next tournament will be on Wednesday July 27. You can follow the Congleton sports club on Facebook here.
