Travellers have been told to stay out of Cheshire East.

A group of travellers have been ordered to leave the borough and not return for 12 months.

It comes after they attempted to set up unauthorised encampments in Handforth, Wilmslow and most recently, Congleton.

A spokesperson for Cheshire East Council said: "The council has received reports of an unauthorised encampment of 15 caravans at Ormiston Way, in Congleton.

"As the transit site is now open, they were offered the site but refused.

"This resulted in the group being served with a Section 62A police notice requiring them to leave Cheshire East and not return for 12 months.

"Reports of unauthorised encampments can be logged on the Cheshire West and Chester website or using the email address [email protected]"

A 15-strong fleet of caravans was spotted in both Wilmslow and Handforth Dean Retail Park on Tuesday, March 25.

It is understood the group then moved on to the football pitch near Ormiston Way in Congleton on Wednesday, March 26.

A Cheshire Police spokesperson said: "A section 60 notice was issued on the site at 1.50pm on Wednesday, March 26, and all of the caravans had left the site by 3.50pm."
