TG Jones confirm closure of Congleton high street branch
By Matthew Hancock-Bruce 5th Oct 2026
A staple of Congleton's high street is set to close.
TG Jones have confirmed that their branch at 39-41 High Street will close at the start of next year.
This announcement comes a little a year after the store rebranded from WH Smith and follows the implementation of TG Jones' 'court-approved restructuring plan'.
A spokesperson said: "As we work to secure the long-term future of TG Jones, we have confirmed that our Congleton shop will close.
"We know this will be disappointing news for our colleagues, customers, and the local community.
"Our focus now is on supporting those affected and continuing to serve customers throughout the closure period.
"We would like to thank all of our colleagues for their commitment and the contribution they have made to TG Jones."
The Congleton TG Jones is currently scheduled to shut for good on January 9, 2027, following a closing down sale.
As a result of this, the Congleton Post Office located inside TG Jones will also have to close.
However, work is already underway to find a replacement location in the town centre.
A Post Office spokesperson said: "We fully recognise the challenging trading conditions that TG Jones and many other High Street retailers are facing at the moment.
" TG Jones had its restructuring plan approved by the High Court on July 1.
"Consequently, TG Jones is to close its Congleton store. Regrettably, Congleton Post Office is due to close in early 2027. The date is being finalised."
They added: "The vacancy has already been advertised, and we have heard from interested retailers. We are now looking more closely at the expressions of interest.
"We want to open a replacement branch as soon as possible, but this can take around six months.
"In the interim alternative branches will be High Town and West Heath."
