A child was assaulted in broad daylight on the Biddulph Valley Way, and there are hopes residents of Congleton from help.

The weekend incident saw a young lad assaulted by a group of balaclava-clad people.

At around 4pm on Sunday 1 May, a 16-year-old boy was walking along Biddulph Valley Way when a group of males approached him from behind.

They then struck the boy over the head which caused him to fall to the ground.

While happening in the Staffordshire portion of the Biddulph-Congleton country walk, the location of serious assault is frequented by Congleton joggers and doing walkers, who may be able to help.

The group of males, all wearing balaclavas, fled in the direction of Biddulph along the railway tracks.

The young boy was taken to hospital for treatment but has since been discharged.

Both Cheshire and Staffordshire police officers are now appealing for anyone who has any information to please come forward.

Cheshire Police Constable Courtney Nancollas said: "This is a particularly nasty attack that had no motive whatsoever.

"The boy has been recovering at home after his ordeal and he is very fortunate that his injuries were not life-threatening.

"This area is really vast and we are relying on anyone who was around the area at the time of the incident who may have seen the males before or after the incident to please get in touch.

You can also disclose information at Congleton Police Station, on Market Square.

"The same goes for anyone who may know who is responsible."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Cheshire Police quoting IML 1259176 via the Cheshire Police website or call 101.

Information can also be passed on to Crimestoppers anonymously by calling 0800 555 111 or via the Crimestoppers website.
