Flies have been causing a nuisance for Congleton residents.

A petition has been launched on Change.org following reports of increased fly activity across the town.

Francesca Davies, who started the petition, says this 'relentless invasion' has been going on for five years now, despite assurances that local recycling companies are complying with regulations.

"Personally, my own home serves as a testament to the severity of this issue," Francesca sid.

"Each summer, fly poo covers our exterior, our doors remain shut to avoid contamination, and our food is under constant threat.

"Most distressing is the worry for our children's health, as the risk of disease becomes a tangible fear.

"This infestation is not simply a nuisance. It poses serious health risks, particularly during summer months when their numbers surge.

"The flies are more than just an annoyance; they contaminate food and can carry diseases.

"The toll on our daily lives is tremendous, and we can no longer accept this as our reality."

The petition launched by Francesca has been signed over 900 times in just a matter of days.

It calls upon local authorities to 'take this matter seriously and to prioritise our community's well-being'.

Francesca added: "The time to act is now. We need thorough investigations into the recycling company's operations and hold them accountable if necessary.

"More robust measures and innovative solutions must be implemented to eradicate the fly problem in our community. Whether through improved waste management practices or advanced pest control strategies, the health and safety of our families depend on swift and decisive action.

"The investigation should not focus solely on the recycling company. Local sewage treatment works, nearby rivers, and any unclaimed or unmanaged land should also be thoroughly examined to determine the true source of the issue. A comprehensive investigation that considers all potential environmental and industrial contributors is more likely to identify the actual cause."

West Heath-based metal recycling company Tandom Metallurgical released a statement on Friday, July 10, addressing these concerns.

It explains that the source of the increased fly activity has not yet been established, with a number of potential factors potentially contributing.

As such, the firm is working with the Environment Agency, Cheshire East Council and independent pest control specialists as enquiries continue.

"Although there is currently no evidence that flies are breeding on our site, we are nevertheless taking the matter seriously and have implemented a range of additional precautionary measures," the statement adds.

"These include enhanced monitoring, increased pest control treatments, more frequent inspections and further investment in facilities designed to manage incoming materials as effectively as possible."

It continues: "We have operated in the local community for more than 15 years and have always sought to be a responsible neighbour and employer.

"We remain committed to cooperating fully with the relevant authorities and will continue to review and strengthen our control measures where appropriate.

"We recognise the concerns that have been expressed and will continue to engage positively with the relevant organisations while investigations are ongoing."
