A pub that sat empty for nearly a decade has now been named the best in East Cheshire.

The Throstles Nest in Buglawton has been crowned Pub of the Year 2025 by Macclesfield and East Cheshire CAMRA.

Having only reopened in January 2023, the award recognises the monumental effort of landlord Michael Cooper and his team to restore this once dilapidated pub.

He said: "To be recognised as Pub of the Year by CAMRA is nothing short of extraordinary, especially when you consider The Throstles Nest was left vacant for nearly 10 years, before reopening in 2023.

"Like most people who are local, I never thought it would reopen, and it is a real testament to, 'anything is possible'."

Michael continued: "I believe that we are very fortunate to have a diverse range of pubs in the local area and I'm very proud to be a part of that.

"Running a pub certainly has its challenges, but it also provides a great deal of satisfaction.

"To say I'm grateful to work with a dedicated team and have the support of a loving community, is an understatement.

"Together we look forward to celebrating our achievement."

The award was presented to The Throstles Nest on Saturday, July 26.

"This fantastic community free house pub serves top class real ale and is an excellent example of a pub that has been rescued from a previously dilapidated state," reads the CAMRA website.

"Thanks to the hard work of Mike Cooper and his team, and the support of Caldmore Taverns, the Throstles Nest rose from the ashes in January 2023 and has been a wonderful place to visit from the very first day."

Visitors to The Throstles Nest can typically expect to find six different real ales on offer, more often that not from breweries within 100 miles.

The interior of the pub is described as 'beautifully and traditionally done', with several indoor areas, a games room, a smoking area and a roof terrace.

The CAMRA website adds: "One of the most striking things about the pub is its very wide age range and good mix of people.

"It has a really friendly, relaxed, community atmosphere and everyone receives a warm welcome."
