A protest will take place outside of Congleton MP Fiona Bruce's constituency office on Saturday.

Campaigners will be outside her office for two hours on Saturday morning 10-12 on September 3.

Cheshire East Women's Equality Party, who have one elected Town Councillor in Congleton, have designed and printed placards. Non-WEP members are also welcome to attend.

The protest is about Westminster removing abortion and sexual health rights for women from an official statement on gender equality.

Campaigners believe this could lead to a rise in dangerous back street abortions.

Congleton's MP of 12 years is Co-chair of the all-party 'pro-life' group of MPs, so is at the centre of this issue.

In a statement, Cheshire East Women's Equality Party had this to say:

"We are holding this protest to highlight the fact that Fiona Bruce has consistently voted against women's reproductive rights in parliament," they said.

Congleton was the first place in the UK that the Women's Equality Party had a representative. Cllr Kay Wesley has been a Women's Equality Party Councillor at Congleton Town Council since May 2019.

"For example, doctors agree that the new rule to allow women to choose to take early-abortion pills at home is by far the safest for many women, yet Fiona Bruce spoke against this lawearlier this year.

"A recent conference on global Freedom of Religion & Belief organised by the UK and chaired by Fiona Bruce, actually deleted bodily autonomy and reproductive rights from an international treaty on women's rights, prompting complaints from other countries about the UK's role.

"Women's right to choose whether or not they continue a pregnancy is a healthcare matter, not a matter for anyone else and certainly not for governments. It is recognised worldwide that the choice of whether or not to bear children is a key building block for women's equality. Fiona Bruce's record in trying to rollback women's rights is shameful, and her constituents need to know about it."

The protest follows the 'Roe v Wade' ruling in America earlier this year, which made abortions more complicated in the states.

The revised government statement can be read here.

Fiona called for an end to at-home abortion provision in March, as you can see in this YouTube clip.

Fiona Bruce's office is located inside Riverside, on Mountbatten Way.
