How Congleton will mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day

The Congleton community will come together to celebrate VE Day.
This Thursday (May 8) marks 80 years since the end of the Second World War in Europe.
Congleton Town Council is planning a series of commemorative events to mark the occasion, celebrating peace and remembering those who served.
Speaking ahead of the event, Town Mayor councillor Kay Wesley said: "This VE Day marks a significant milestone in our history.
"As we honour 80 years since the end of the war in Europe, we remember the bravery and sacrifice of all who served and those who gave their lives for our freedom.
"It's also a moment to come together as a community in gratitude, reflection, and hope for the future.
"I hope all Congleton people will come out to support the event and join us in commemorating this important day."
Plans for VE Day 2025 in Congleton
The day will begin with the official VE Day Proclamation and flag raising at 9am at the Lawton Street Cenotaph, followed by a service at 11am, held in partnership with the Royal British Legion.
The public are invited to attend both events.
As part of the day's tributes, invited guests, including care home residents, less able citizens, and elderly members of the community, will enjoy a traditional fish and chip lunch at the Town Hall, accompanied by classic 1940s hits performed live by the talented R.Hazelwood.
The event is sponsored by Congleton Town Council, Congleton Partnership, and Congleton Lions, with guests also treated to homemade cakes provided by Mossley Women's Institute.
Meanwhile, in a visual tribute, 'Soldier Bear', a newly painted commemorative Congleton Bear, will be on display at the entrance of the Town Hall for photographs.
In the evening, St Peter's Church will join the national tribute by ringing its bells at 6.30pm, and Congleton Town Hall will be illuminated in red, white and blue at 9.30pm, symbolising the enduring legacy of peace and unity.
