There will be a parade this weekend to celebrate the third term of Congleton's latest mayor.

Councillor Dennis Murphy, who lives on Congleton's Swan Bank, will be the centrepiece of the parade, delayed due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Congleton's Mayor, Cllr Denis Murphy, invites residents to take part in the parade and Civic Service this Sunday (12 September) at St. Peter's Church, Chapel Street, 3.00pm.

The parade will leave the Town Hall at 2.45pm prompt, going through our high street.

The Mayor, who is also a Liberal Democrat Councillor for Congleton Town Council and Cheshire East Council, has been Mayor of our town twice before.

His terms span three decades. Cllr Denis Murphy was previously Mayor in 2008-2009 and 2014-2015.

He'll be the apolitical head of our town for ceremonial duties for 2021-22.

The Sunday service will be held at St.Peter's Church, Chapel Street, commencing at 3.00pm and will be conducted by Mayor's Chaplain, Father William Kilkenny.

Mrs Joan Myatt will be the Mayor's Consort and Tom Gilman, Explorer Scout with Dane Valley Scout Group his Mayor's Cadet.

The Mayor will raise funds for various local charities but will be focusing on The Christie Cancer Unit at Macclesfield Hospital, which is opening in December 2021 and will serve Congleton.

He will also support local youth cadet services as one of his main good causes.

When sworn in last June, the Mayor said: "The newly elected Mayor said: "I am looking forward to serving Congleton as Mayor over the next 12 months and will endeavour to do so to the best of my ability and with integrity, honesty and enthusiasm.

"I have a great team around me with my Consort, Cadet and Chaplain and I look forward to representing the town."

Throughout the year he will be opening garden parties, to school visits, attending functions in neighbouring towns to helping switch on Congleton's Christmas Lights.

Today is the last day Congleton businesses, groups or organisations wishing to take part can contact Linda Minshull: [email protected].
