New electric car chargers coming to Congleton carpark
Cheshire East has secured more than £150,000 from the government to install electric vehicle charging points in its towns.
And Congleton will gain from one of the 15 council-owned carparks to benefit across Cheshire East.
The Antrobus Street Car Park in Congleton on 54 Antrobus Street will gain an unspecified number of car chargers.
Work is expected to start on installing the infrastructure in towns across the borough within the next few months. But there is no target date for the completion of the ports.
Highways and transport committee chair Craig Browne made the announcement about the £151,000 grant at Wednesday's meeting of the full council at Tatton Park.
"This funding will enable us to install electric vehicle charging infrastructure at 15 locations in 12 towns across the borough including Crewe, Knutsford, Macclesfield, Middlewich, Congleton, Nantwich, Alsager, Sandbach and Wilmslow," he said.
"These will be at a mix of on street locations and in public car parks that are close to residential areas and work is expected to start during the current financial year."
Congleton joined towns of a similar size like Alsager and Sandbach in getting one new carpark with electric car charging facilities.
Only three towns got multiple carparks which are being electrified. Knutsford got two.
Macclesfield gained the second most of all towns with three, with only Crewe getting more at four.
The carparks confirmed across Cheshire East to benefit are a mix of paid, free and free after 3pm carparks.
It is not known if the Congleton's new charging facilities will paid or free to charge, as of yet.
18,776 new electric vehicles were registered in the UK in July 2022.
