Congleton Town Labour Party continues to prepare for the challenges of the year ahead with the election of several new branch officers at its AGM on Wednesday (3rd February).
Richard Walton, vice-chair of Congleton Town Labour Party, said: "Our AGM was held virtually for the first time, allowing all members the opportunity to vote for their 2021/22 branch officers in a democratic but safe manner.
"Our members responded admirably, and it was my pleasure to preside over the first AGM held in that manner.
"The COVID pandemic has clearly affected our ability to campaign over the last twelve months in the traditional manner, but we have by no means sat idle, moving the majority of our activities online.
"We have also been fundraising and it was the highlight of my year when, through member's generosity, we were able to donate £200 to the Congleton Food Hub and £100 to Visyon Congleton, a charity supporting the emotional health and wellbeing of children, young people and their families."
Commenting on his appointment into his new chair role, Ray King said: "I am very proud to be elected as the chair of Congleton Town Labour Party.
"The Congleton Town Labour Party is made up of a group of very enthusiastic and caring people. We will be campaigning for equality in society as well as a fairer and greener future.
"We will fight to make sure that the people who have done such a fantastic job throughout the pandemic are recognised.
"When we get through this it'll be because of the NHS staff, care workers, ambulance drivers, emergency services, teachers, cleaners, porters, shop workers, delivery drivers and all other key workers that have carried on working sometimes at great risk to themselves."
Mr King continued: "Many of these workers are paid the minimum wage, a situation which should not be allowed to continue.
"Our mission has to be to restore trust in our party as a force for good and a force for change."
Mr Walton also commented: "Women have always played a vital role in the Labour movement, and I am so pleased to see a gender balance amongst the branch officers in our group."
On her recent appointment as women's officer, Jen Lomas reacted: "I am delighted to be elected as women's officer for the Congleton Town Labour group.
"We want to look for ways to support women during these difficult times and to ensure, post-COVID that we promote equality and opportunity for women."
Jen's husband, Mick, was also elected to a new role with the Congleton Town Labour group.
Commenting on his appointment as secretary, Mr Lomas, said: "As the new secretary I am determined to promote local interests and take a more active part in the local Labour Party."
