A former St John Ambulance training centre in Congleton will be bulldozed to make way for a new apartment block.

NHS Property Services applied for permission back in July to build six apartments on the former West Road Clinic site.

The single-storey building which is currently on site was most recently used by St John Ambulance and is now vacant and in poor condition.

The planning document states: "The proposed development presents an opportunity to re-develop the site in a manner which better respects the adjacent listed building and would not have an adverse impact on the identified listed heritage assets."

These plans were approved by Cheshire East Council on 13 September.

An Officer's Report published by the authority says: "The proposed development lies within the Congleton Settlement Boundary. The principal for erection of 6 residential apartments on this site is acceptable.

"The impact of the development on drainage/flood risk, residential amenity/noise/air quality/contaminated land, highways, ecology and landscaping would be considered at the Technical Details Stage.

"As a result, the application is recommended for approval."
