As part of a long tradition of mayors in Congleton a special mayor making ceremony will be held on Thursday, 25 May at 7pm in the Town Hall to officially welcome the new town mayor.

The mayor will be elected by their fellow councillors and will serve until May 2024.

As part of the formalities the new town mayor will select his or her chaplain and cadet, chosen from one to the town's uniformed youth groups.

A new deputy town mayor will also be appointed for the civic year ahead. Members of the public are invited to attend to observe the colourful proceedings.

The service will see the current town mayor, Cllr Margaret Gartside hand over the chain of office to her successor after a tremendous year in office.

Cllr Gartside said: "It has been a privilege to serve as Congleton Town Mayor during a memorable and historic time for both the country and Congleton. 2022 was a special year for Congleton and numerous activities were held to celebrate the 750th anniversary of the town gaining its first charter. It has been a truly memorable year for me, I have met some fantastic people. I would like to thank everyone for their support and send my very best wishes to my successor as they take up the best job in town!"

Local groups and organisations are invited to join in the historic Mayor's Civic Parade and Service on Sunday 2 July 2023. The parade will march from the back of the Town Hall at 2.45pm to St Peter's Church, Chapel Street for a 3pm service.

The town council says it would like to welcome everyone who lives and works in the community to attend both civic events.

Booking is not necessary, just turn up on the day and enjoy the proceedings.
