A nonprofit helping feed those in need in Congleton will turn one this month.

Congleton Social Supermarket offers affordable groceries on 54 Lawton Street.

The good cause is a charity chaired by Amanda Beech.

It opened in September 2021, and functions entirely on volunteers and donations.

The full name of the cause is The Green Tree House COngleton Social Supermarket.

"Congleton Social Supermarket is a food hub where we have good quality items at dramatically reduced prices," said Amanda.

"We have tins, fresh bacon, cheese, toiletries, cleaners and more.

"There is no criteria, everybody is welcome, and it is doing really well."

The centre started off offering ten items of food of customers' choosing for just £4.50. Prices have only rose marginally, with ten items now costing a fiver one year on.

More expensive items can be found at a more affordable price for those struggling, such as women's menstrual products. (Image - Alexander Greensmith / Macclesfield Nub News)
Options go up incrementally to 30 items for just £15, which is the most popular option with people doing their regular shop here.

Prices are subject to change given the oncoming cost of living crisis, which will also see more Congletonians use the store.

They even have people from as far as Macclesfield using the store. They also have a sister store in Biddulph which started before the Congleton one.

Kathleen Wilshaw, Amanda's mum, is one of 12 volunteers who help out at the store.

"It is all quality in-date food," she said.

"I love seeing people's faces when they go away with their baskets full, with how money they have got for their money, and how pleased they are.

"We do whatever we can to raise funds. Such as raffles at Christmas and Easter time.

"And Amanda is so kind, I am so proud of her."

"Warburtons regularly donates bread," added Amanda.

"And we get our eggs from Pace's Farm in Congleton.

"If any local manufacturers want to donate food that would be fabulous. We would love a sponsorship as well.

"We'd love to have a community café like we do in Biddulph in the future, but while where we are is amazing, we currently don't have room for that.

"Foodbanks are brilliant, but they are a short term solution. Hopefully, this is a long term solution.

"The response has been amazing. We have had people in tears.

"Thank you everyone for your support."

Amanda has years of experience with food, as she used to work for Morning Fresh grocers in Congleton.

Please note: Congleton Social Supermarket is only cash only, as it is a nonprofit.

The shop is only open two days a week as Amanda has to travel around Cheshire, Derbyshire, Shropshire and Staffordshire to find cheap food for stock.

She even uses fuel money out of her own pocket to pay for it.

They are open from 10am to 3pm on Wednesday and Friday.
