Congleton's highest-ranking Lib Dem has voiced his views following today's turbulent political events.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson resigned today following a series of resignations, and a local Liberal Democrat politician says it wasn't unexpected.

Cllr Phil Williams believes it may cause long-term damage and people's attitudes to voting, and local democracy may be coloured by what has happened.

The councillor of three years. who is chair of Congleton Constituency Liberal Democrats, and also leader of Cheshire East's Liberal Democrat group, was speaking candidly with Congleton, Alsager and Sandbach Nub News.

"The wheels of the Johnson wagon were bound to come off sooner or later," said Cllr Williams.

"The Conservatives elected a good campaigner for sure, but he turned out to be a poor Prime Minister and party leader.

"The mass resignations over the last 24 hours or so show how untenable his position was and how loose a grip he had on the helm.

"My main concerns now are about political instability at a national level and the need to rebuild public trust and confidence in the political process at all levels.

"What happens nationally often colours people's attitudes at regional and local level. It can undermine people's confidence in our hard-won democratic process.

"There are opportunities for the opposition parties of course and I hope that some order can come out of the chaos - much of it of the Prime Minister's own making.

"Whatever our political views, we need to pull together to maintain standards in public life and restore the confidence of the British public.

"We all deserve better than this."

As the Congleton constituencies' top Lib Dem, should an election be called, Phil could take on current Congleton MP Fiona Bruce. However, this is not a certainty as he is currently just their Chair.

Fiona has not responded to frequent requests for comment by Congleton Nub News.

Congleton Conservative Association has been contacted for comment.

Former Congleton Constituency Labour Party Chair Michael Unnet said ""The problem is that I don't think a change at the top of one person is what this country needs - Tory MPs including current and resigned Cabinet ministers elected, supported, and propped up Boris Johnson knowing full well who he was and what he had done.

"They are just as responsible for the damage done to the country and the extremely poor standards of government."
