Unicorns may be the stuff of legend, but Congleton-based horse trainer Charlotte Bailey is still hoping to make dreams come true for visitors to the Christmas lights switch on this year – with a little help from her horse, Tuli.
Tuli is a Lipizzaner, an unusual breed most famously used by the Spanish Riding School of Vienna in their 'horse ballets'. Tuli, who was originally rescued from a breeding stud in Hungary, came to Charlotte around seven years ago with a reputation for being difficult.
The unicorn-lookalike made the 1200-mile trip from Eastern Europe to Congleton, and has flourished ever since.
"Tuli had trust issues and wasn't the easiest of horses to build a partnership with. A lot of people thought he'd never be able to have a normal life as a riding horse," said Charlotte.
"We took things very slowly and now we have a fantastic relationship. I soon found out that he loves being in the limelight, and he's been used in lots of photoshoots and even in an advert.
"He's really found his niche and loves all the attention. I've had tiny children riding him and have even set up my own business, White Horse Wedding Hire, to help couples create special and memorable photos for their big day.
"I love creating fantasy scenarios for photoshoots, and Tuli has been a Pegasus, circus horse and battle charger as well as a unicorn. He can turn his hoof to anything!
"I was delighted to be asked to be part of the Congleton Christmas lights switch on this year. It's probably the biggest public event we've done yet, as there'll be the lantern parade, Santa and sleigh and a brass band! I know Tuli will take it in his stride, though.
"I'd love people to come and meet him, take a photo and make a wish with a 'real life unicorn'!"
Charlotte and Tuli will be at the event in Congleton town centre from 4pm on 26 November, which is a Friday.
