Congleton Lawn Tennis Club on West Street has hosted their latest tourney - to rousing success.

Sunday 19th September saw the staging of the Club Mixed Doubles.

The event was played as an open draw with all pairs handicapped to try and even up the competition.

The first round losers went into a separate plate competition.

In the main draw the semi finals saw two close matches with Matt Parker and Helen Dyson beating Chris Garside and Kim Bennett.

Julian Keen and Larysa Walls saw off Mike Massey and Beth Hitchen.

In the final Matt and Helen came from 0-3 down to take the Burton Shield trophy and the prize vouchers courtesy of Portobello Pizzeria, of 42 Lawton Street.

Second place Julian and Larysa took home vouchers from Bare Health, of 34 High Street.

In the plate competition another good final saw Les Malgas and Jackie Simpson edge out Jonluka Moore and Anne Moore.

Special congratulations went to Jonluka in his first-ever tournament.

Les and Jackie won the vouchers from Von Sorrels who are new sponsors - special thanks go to Ron Smith and staff from the Congleton takeaway liaising with the club to arrange this gift.

Committee member Nick Wilkins presented the prizes, thanked all of the sponsors, and the players for taking part and the organiser Andrew Giltrap.

Nick also received his prize for being one of the winners of the 2021 Daisybank Singles Challenge - this was a voucher for afternoon tea for two.

The other winner Ian Oakley will receive his voucher shortly.

For one Congleton couple, the score was 25-love, as Nick and his wife Claire also celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary at the tournament.

Andrew Giltrap said: "Thanks went to Lindsay Newton for the special cake, those who provided refreshments and Nick and Claire for the champagne and the round of drinks they bought for the players and spectators.

"Nick quipped that despite playing together in the tournament they remain married!!"
