Congleton's 1st team took on the visiting Ellesmere port this Saturday on Hankinsons field in Congleton.

Both teams took to the field in high spirits and with an abundance of energy, Ellesmere took the lead and scored early missing their conversion and putting the score at 0-5.

The match restarted and Congleton were hot off the mark with Joseph Kanauros racing down the pitch towards Ellesmere's try line, tackled by Ellesmere's back line of defence.

The ball went loose but was quickly pounced upon by Congleton and through the firm grasp of Tom Vandersteen was set down over the try line and Congleton saw their first try of the match, a missed conversion meant the score was set at 5-5.

Ellesmere intercepted a pass between the Congleton players and were the next to score but again missed the conversion giving them back the lead 5-10.

But before long and with the ball back in Congleton's possession young Tom Vandersteen dodged this way and that to weave between the Ellesmere defensive line and managed once again to place the ball over their try line bringing the score back to an even playing field of 10-10.

A penalty to Ellesmere Port takes the score to 10-13

On the stroke of half time Congleton strike back with another try! Joe K spots some space behind the oppositions defensive line and chips the ball into the gap which Ed Williams chases after and goes over line.

With the conversion cruelly bouncing off the crossbar the half-time score is Congleton 15 Ellesmere Port 13.

Back after half-time and both teams are fighting for the next score. After some end to end rugby, Ellesmere are back in the game.

Chasing down the pitch, they dive through the Congleton defence and gain themselves another try, managing to convert this time giving them the lead 15-20.

Sustained pressure from both teams sees the clock tick ever closer to full time.

Last play of the game and it's a lineout 5 metres from Ellesmere Port's try line. The ball is thrown in and captain Greg Wood ploughs over the line and Congleton draw level! The players and amassed crowd hold their breath as Joe K lines up the all important conversion. His boot connects with the ball and it sails straight between the uprights! Congleton win 22-20!
