'Potentially toxic' algae has been spotted at a beauty spot near Congleton.

Cheshire East Countryside Ranger Service has issued a warning after blue-green algae was found in the lake at Brereton Heath Local Nature Reserve.

Technically known as cyanobacteria, blue-green algae is a collection of microscopic organisms that can produce toxins which are dangerous and sometimes even lethal for animals.

It can also affect humans, causing skin and stomach problems, with children more at risk than adults.

A spokesperson for the Ranger Service said: "Please be aware that blue-green algae is currently present in the lake at Brereton Heath Local Nature Reserve.

"Blue-green algae is potentially toxic and can cause illness in animals.

"Do not allow dogs to enter the lake or drink the water in the lake.

"Please avoid personal contact with lake water and keep children away from the water.
