A warning has been issued after teens were caught breaking into an abandoned building.

Cheshire Police officers responded to a 999 call on Sunday, September 6, reporting of a burglary in Congleton town centre.

Upon arrival, multiple youths made off on foot, with some detained in the area and stop searched.

It has transpired that the building in question is disused, with police using this case to highlight the importance of parents knowing where their children are.

A spokesperson for the force said: "Whilst exploring abandoned buildings may seem like harmless fun, it is not only extremely dangerous due to the unknown hazards inside, but could also constitute civil and even criminal offences.

"Those involved have been spoken to and dealt with suitably, however there continues to be a large presence of young people in the town centre who have been warned about anti-social behaviour."

They added: "Parents, please make sure you know where your children are and that they are behaving responsibly and safely when they are out.

"We don't disparage children getting out in the fresh air and enjoying themselves however when their idea of fun impacts the safety and enjoyment of other users of the town, we will take action.
