An application to extend the opening hours of Congleton Snooker Club until midnight seven days a week is being opposed by a number of local residents.

Congleton Snooker Club has applied to Cheshire East Council to vary its licence so it can sell alcohol on the premises at Royle Street from 12 noon to midnight, every day.

The club has also applied for the same hours to hold indoor sports – snooker and pool.

But seven nearby residents have emailed Cheshire East Council to object, saying they are already disturbed by noise – mainly from smokers using the club's balcony.

One resident stated: "I am all for helping local businesses, especially after Covid, but please take into consideration that there are residents who live across the river from the snooker club.

"At least once a week there is noise from what appears to be a 'smokers area' at the club and when it is chucking out time. If hours are extended this disturbance could be worsened, especially when my window is open in the warmer months."

Another, who lives in a block of flats on the opposite side of the River Dane from the club, said he had needed to contact the club on occasion 'because of excessive noise late at night and even into the early hours of the morning'.

"The problem is that they have a side door opening onto a balcony overlooking the river which is used by smokers," said the resident.

"My worry is that this will continue to happen more and more frequently and with longer opening hours, later into the night."

Another objector said: "This is going to impact our lives in our own home.

"We work and my children are at school, we have to be up early in the morning and need a good night's sleep. If this was to happen night after night, with people drinking until midnight, it will have a huge impact on our lives."

One woman who contacted the council, said: "My husband is very disabled and goes to bed by 8.30pm and if he is kept awake by the noise this will definitely impact on his health."

Cheshire Police has not objected to the application but proposed conditions relating to CCTV and the operation of a Challenge 25 policy.

Applicant Anthony Heeley states on the application form that the club is busier in the winter than in the summer.

"We do not normally open on a Saturday but are getting requests to do so and need the licence to cover these times," he said.

He said there are no plans for any functions, just snooker, pool and darts.

The application will be considered at Monday's (April 11) meeting of the council's Licensing Act sub-committee at 2pm at Macclesfield Town Hall.

Congleton Snooker Club is located on Royle St, Congleton CW12 1HL.
