A new representative is needed for Congleton's youngsters.

Congleton Town Council has opened up nominations for the Mayor's Cadet for the upcoming civic year, 2025-26.

This opportunity offers a young person the chance to represent Congleton's youth, support the Mayor at key civic events, and develop valuable skills that will benefit their future endeavours.

Congleton's current Cadet, Barnie Mitcheson, has been reflecting on his experience.

He said: "Serving alongside Town Mayor, councillor Kay Wesley, as the Mayor's Cadet has been a fantastic opportunity.

"I've thoroughly enjoyed representing young people at civic events, meeting inspiring individuals, and developing my confidence and leadership skills.

"It's an experience I will always value, and I encourage other young people to apply!"

As part of its commitment to inclusivity, Congleton Town Council has updated the Civic Protocol for the Mayor's Cadet.

Key criteria

  • Any youth group or organisation may nominate a young member for the role.
  • The nominee must be a resident of the Congleton parish
  • The young person should be aged 14-18 during their term of appointment
  • The group should ideally nominate one outstanding candidate who is keen to take on the role and has agreed to be nominated. The group must submit the application on behalf of the nominee.

The successful candidate will be formally appointed as the Mayor's Cadet during the Mayor Making Ceremony at Congleton Town Hall on Thursday, May 22, at 7pm.

Throughout their term, the Mayor's Cadet will accompany the Mayor at civic engagements, participate in official events, and serve as an ambassador for Congleton's young people.

Youth groups interested in nominating a member can download the application form from the town council's website or contact the Congleton Information Centre for assistance.

Completed applications should be submitted to [email protected] by April 22.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend a brief interview on Thursday, May 1.
