A roundabout for disabled children could be installed in Congleton Park, becoming only the second place in the borough with the specialist equipment.

Following a request from a family with two children, one of whom is permanently wheelchair bound, Congleton Town Council have sought quotes for the facility.

Councillors had been told that the family had struggled to find nearby places in the borough for both children to play together.

Ruth Burgess, the Streetscape Development Manager for Congleton Town Council, has recently met with a couple of play area equipment representatives regarding adding inclusive play equipment within Congleton Park.

Currently, within Cheshire East the Queens Park, in Crewe, is the only play area where residents can take a wheelchair and use a piece of play equipment.

However, residents need a key to use the specific piece of play equipment.

In a report circulated at last Thursday's Congleton Town Council meeting of Town Hall Assets and Services Committee, Mrs Burgess said: "We would like to see an all-inclusive piece of equipment within Congleton Park where both a wheelchair user can jointly share with their friends and family.

"We now have received quotes back and our next steps are to seek funding from different groups and trusts."

Mrs Burgess said she expected the equipment would cost between £10,000 and £20,000.

Cllr Robert Douglas said: "I think this is a wonderful idea to be inclusive and it is exactly what we should be doing.

"I hope we see this in the not-too-distant future."

Cllr George Hayes said: "It's one of those things that when it is brought forward, you wonder why it was never the case long before, given the imperative need that it is for some families."
