A disused building currently advertising our town's 750th anniversary could become a new restaurant.

The former British Heart Foundation shop in Congleton could be converted into a pizza restaurant.

An application has been submitted to Cheshire East to change the use of the Bridge Street building from retail space to restaurant.

The scheme also includes three apartments above the former shop.

The application, submitted by Matthew Barton, states: "This application seeks permission to convert the building into a pizza restaurant at ground floor level with three lettable self-contained suites to the first and second floors."

It says this will mean only very minor changes to the outside of the red brick building, which is described as having 'an interesting 'art deco' styling and window detailing'.

The design and access statement submitted with the planning application states: "The existing layout provides an open plan retail space on the ground floor, with storage and office space to the first and second floors."

It says, under the proposals: "Internally, the ground floor is provided with a disabled WC, and a new door and stud wall separates a new storage area, but the open-plan layout is otherwise retained."

The British Heart Foundation closed the Congleton shop four years ago.

The shop had traded for 25 years but it was reported at the time there had been a huge reduction in sales and it was not viable to keep it open.

The application, number 22/1595C, can be viewed on the planning portal on the Cheshire East website.

The last date for submitting comments is June 16 and, according to the Cheshire East website, the application will be determined by a planning officer under delegated authority and not at committee.

Congleton: The site is situated on 21 Bridge Street, to the right of Greggs.
