Rotary-Congleton is holding its annual competition to find the best Guy Fawkes in Congleton!

To celebrate November 5th, Rotary-Congleton is launching its Guy Fawkes Competition. Rotary says that last year the competition, run during the lockdown, raised spirits and generated a great deal of interest.

This year, organised fireworks in the park are back, but the club says that the fun remains and they hope that as many people as possible will join in and display their Guys in their gardens.

The competition is open to all households with a Congleton postcode, with entrants displaying their Guys in their front gardens. Entries must be visible from the road. They will be photographed and the winner will receive a first prize of £50.

The guys must be displayed prominently on private land from October 23rd and can be removed and disposed of safely in the usual way on November 5th.

Photographs of the Guys will be taken during the last few days of October and the winner announced shortly afterwards.

"We've seen the popularity of scarecrow competitions. Guy Fawkes is an unique national figure and thought we'd like to bring some fun and joy for the town to remember, remember on the fifth of November." a Rotary spokesperson said.

It costs only £5 to enter the Guy Fawkes competition and the entry form and full rules are available on the club's website.

The entry fee is easy to pay online. Only entries that are registered and the entry fee paid will be eligible to win the prize.

There are very few rules for Congleton folk to join. Guys must be a minimum of 1 metre tall and displayed visibly from the road. The safety of passing motorists and pedestrians must be foremost when positioning the guy.

The winning entry from last year's Rotary competition is being featured on eye-catching posters to promote the competition that will be appearing throughout the town centre.

Rotary hopes that as many people as possible will want to join in.

As last year, the Club is organising a separate competition for nursery and junior schools and is contacting the schools individually. The school entries will top the town's bonfire in the park on November 6th.
