The refurbishment of Congleton's Cenotaph has commenced and the build should be completed by the first week of October.

Currently the War Memorial site, on Lawton Street, is being cleared and all salvageable items have been stored for further use.

A Congleton Partnership spokesperson posted on social media: "The build should be completed by the first week in October and will include new plaques with the missing names added."

The Congleton Cenotaph is being refurbished to add the missing circa 239 names of the fallen to the plaques, taking the total names to 590.

Construction work was originally scheduled to commence from 21st April, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, the project was delayed.

The refurbishment is being carried out so that the town's Cenotaph can display the names of all the local men and women who have lost their lives through serving their Country.
