Police have been stepping up their efforts to stamp out 'anti-social driving' around Congleton.

Residents living near Congleton Bypass and the A34 have raised concerns about high-speed driving.

In response, police have seized a number of vehicles and issued traffic offence reports as they look to improve safety in the area.

A spokesperson for the force said: "The high-speed nature of the Congleton Bypass and A34 can attract anti-social driving, which poses a risk to other road users and causes nuisance to people living nearby.

"There has recently been a change to police powers under Section 59 of the Police Reform Act 2002 - Officers no longer need to issue a warning before seizing a vehicle being used in an anti-social manner. This allows us to take immediate action against drivers and riders whose behaviour causes alarm, distress or annoyance.

"Over recent weeks, we have seized a number of vehicles and issued traffic offence reports as part of our ongoing efforts to tackle this issue and improve road safety."

They added: "While operational demands mean we cannot always be present in these locations, information from the public plays a vital role.

"If you witness anti-social driving, please report it to us and, where possible, provide registration numbers, vehicle descriptions and any relevant footage.

"We are also continuing to work with local authorities and partner agencies to identify opportunities for road safety improvements, including changes to road layouts and speed limits where appropriate."
