Person pronounced dead on the tracks near Congleton Station

A person has sadly been pronounced dead on the tracks near Congleton Station after being hit by a train this morning.

Rail passengers between Stoke-on-Trent and Macclesfield are facing delays due to the incident.

A British Transport Police spokesperson said: "Officers were called to the line near Congleton at 10am today (Thursday 24 June) following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended and sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers are currently working to identify the person and inform their family.

"The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."

Services have been suspended on Avanti West Coast, CrossCountry and Northern trains.

Traffic monitoring company Inrix reports: "Service suspended on Avanti West Coast, CrossCountry and Northern between Stoke-on-Trent and Macclesfield due to emergency services dealing with an incident at Congleton.

"Avanti and CrossCountry services may be diverted via Crewe."
