Congleton: Crowdfunder for four-month-old puppy killed by parvovirus

A pair of puppies who were rehomed together in Congleton have been separated, after one died from Parvovirus.

Congleton Husky cross German Shepards Magic and Storm were brothers, adopted by Somerford Booths resident Charlotte Bailey in November 2021.

They came from Romania, and came into Charlotte's life at four months old.

However, just 24 hours after they were adopted, Charlotte knew something wasn't right as Magic began to fall ill.

In happier times: Storm and Charlotte on the right, and Charlotte's friend Karen Watson on the left with Magic. Just hours later, tragedy would strike.

Any dog owners' worst fears were confirmed within the same day she took him to the vets, as not one but two of her dogs were confirmed to have canine parvovirus, a disease with a 91% mortality rate.

Shortly after, the pups were separated as Storm began to show signs of recovery, so was moved to overnight vets in Macclesfield, but Magic's health deteriorated and would soon pass away in Congleton.

Despite paying the bill off the surviving dog Storm, Charlotte is struggling to afford the extra funds to cover the late pup Magic.

The Congleton parish dog mum-of-three is now hoping to raise £1500 to help cover the costs of Magic's bill, following his death.

Charlotte took her pooches to Wright & Morten Vets, of Moody Street, in Congleton, when she learned of the terrible news.

"It has caused tremendous stress," said Charlotte.

"Parvovirus attacks their internal intestines. It can attack the small or big intestines, but this time it attacked the small intestines which can be very, very serious.

"It doesn't affect older dogs as such, or dogs that have been vaccinated. These two puppies had their vaccinations, and it was the first time the rescue got them from have had a case of Parvo, they were devastated to hear it too.

"Storm's immune system was a little stronger than Magic's. And is still with us, you look at Storm now and wouldn't be able to tell that he was ill.

Storm made a full recovery, but is now left without a brother, and an owner who is struggling to pay vet bills.

"It is passed when a dog sniffs another dog's faeces, so the message I would like to get out is the absolute importance of cleaning after your dog.

"When you go to the park or let your dog sniff nose to nose or nose to faeces, you don't know every dog that your dog sniffs with is vaccinated.

"Any donations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much. It has stressed me so much. I already have had my first job affected by COVID, and low hours with the other.

"I was so stressed over Christmas with what happened with the puppies that I had to give a pub job I had up, because I just couldn't face people.

"You don't expect suddenly within 24 hours you'll need to go to the vets with two puppies, one dying, one nearly dying, and to be two grand down over Christmas.

"So thank you for any support towards this extortionate bill. I have chewed my fingers to pieces I've been so stressed! I wouldn't wish the stress of having a puppy with Parvo on anybody."

Five people have donated to support Charlotte, as of publication.

A failed Parvo vaccine may have been the reason why Magic had passed, but these claims are to be investigated.

"I am eternally grateful for how lucky Storm is to have survived Parvo," Charlotte added.

"Thank you for Congleton Nub News for getting the word out. It has been very sad and very costly as well."
